The habits that keep a problem going
An adjustment is one hour. The rest of your week is lifting, sitting, driving, yard work, practice and the gym, and plenty of it is done the same way that hurt you in the first place. Dr. Earnst looks at what you actually do all day, because a back or neck that gets irritated again every Tuesday is usually telling you something about Tuesday.
At Earnst Chiropractic Clinic in High Point, that conversation is part of the visit. You describe the job, the sport, the chores and the hours at a desk. He explains, in plain terms, which movements are loading the sore spot and why.
Coaching, not a list of don'ts
The clinic's approach is to coach patients on certain activities to avoid or to do differently, so a particular health challenge is not aggravated. That means specifics: how to bend for the laundry basket, how to set up the car seat, what to change about the way you swing a club or carry a toddler.
Dr. Earnst taught anatomy and physiology for years, and it shows. He likes to show you the structure involved so the advice makes sense instead of sounding like a rule. When you understand why a movement bothers you, it is easier to remember in the moment.
Activity advice works alongside your adjustments and your corrective exercises. If you are already doing the home exercises, tell him which activities make them harder; that tells him where to look next.
Back to what you enjoy
The goal is a full, happy life made of the activities you enjoy most, not a life organized around avoiding pain. Dr. Earnst is an athlete himself, a bike, swim and run athlete and an avid outdoorsman, and a competitive swimmer through high school. He knows what it is to want to keep moving.
If you want to hear more, ask him about goal setting, the Grand Canyon and swimming Alcatraz. It tends to come up when somebody tells him what they are training for.
